The Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority will hold a grand opening ceremony Thursday, Oct. 8 at 9 a.m. to celebrate the completion of Marion D. Bennett Sr. Plaza, Phase II, a new affordable housing development at 1818 Balzar Ave.

The project includes 59 senior-preferred apartment homes with onsite amenities, developed in partnership with contractor Kalb Industries. Event access is located on Comstock Drive, north of Balzar Avenue.

The development is named for Rev. Dr. Marion D. Bennett Sr., a former Nevada assemblyman and prominent civil rights defender who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 1960s. Bennett also served as pastor of the first Black Methodist church in Las Vegas for more than 45 years.

Lewis Jordan, Executive Director of SNRHA, will lead the ceremony alongside a broad slate of state and local officials, including U.S. Representative Steven Horsford, Nevada State Senator Dina Neal, City of Las Vegas Councilwoman Nancy Brune (Chair of the SNRHA Board), and Cheryl Borgstrom, Nevada State Director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Additional attendees include Clark County Manager Kevin Schiller, Las Vegas Councilwoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong, Sonny Vinuya of the State of Nevada, and Nia Girma, Affordable Housing Liaison for the State of Nevada Housing Division. A Bennett Plaza resident, Sophia Winter, is also scheduled to participate.

Media interested in attending should RSVP by Oct. 7 to Melissa Warren at melissa@twgpr.com or 702-528-6016.
